Medina Lake is located near San Antonio, Texas in the Hill Country. The Medina River originates in Bandera County and flows 116 miles through Medina and Bexar Counties where it empties into the San Antonio River. The lake occupies 16 miles beginning near the mouth of the river and ending at the dam. The dam is a National Monument and was built between 1900 & 1912. At the time of its completion it was the biggest concrete dam in Texas and the 4th biggest in the country. A line of the Southern Pacific Railroad was laid from Dunlay to the location of the dam in 1911 to supply materials to the site. The dam has no reinforcing steel; it is sustained by its own massive weight. 70 people lost their lives working on the dam. Roughly 12,000 acres were flooded to supply irrigation for 150,000 acres. Mico, Texas is a small community on the lake, Mico is an acronym for Medina Valley Irrigation Company. At the time of dam completion the elevation was recorded as 1084' a.s.l. (above sea level) and the spillway at 1072' a.s.l.. In 1929 the U.S.G.S. renumbered actual sea level height changing the dam to 1076.2' a.s.l. and spillway to 1064.2' a.s.l..
